In 1957 the newlyweds moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Northrop and Douglas Aircraft. He married Carol Joyce Peeples of Baker City in 1956. Drafted for the Korean War, he served in the US Army from 1951-1953 at Fort Bliss Texas and the White Sands test range as a member of the 2nd Guided Missile Group working with the first US intercontinental ballistic missiles and captured German rockets. In 1950 he graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He grew up on a farm on the Cove highway attending a countryside one-room school and then graduating in 1946 from La Grande High School. Mert was born Octoin La Grande to George and Laura Hamann Taylor. Please bring your favorite pie if you wish to share. Mert was an accomplished pie baker and at his request pie and coffee will be served.

Friends are invited to join the family for a reception to be held immediately following the interment (approximately 3 p.m.) at the Fort Union Grange Hall 63161 Gekeler Lane, La Grande.
